What are Tonsils and Adenoids?
- Tonsils – The Tonsils are clusters of tissue at the back of the neck that protect the body against certain infections.
- Adenoids – The Adenoids are located behind the nose and in the roof of the mouth. Their function is also to protect the body against infection.
When are Tonsil and Adenoids Removed?
If either the Tonsils or Adenoids become too enlarged that they obstruct air pathways, removal becomes an option. Frequent infections that are not treatable by antibiotics are also an indicator that one or both need to be removed.
What Occurs during a Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy?
A Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy removes the tonsils and is an excision of the adenoids. The procedures are often performed at the same time.
It is an outpatient procedure that can last up to an hour and is performed under general anesthesia.
